Peace filled night, my mind can wander free among
the streets and lanes
Of memories and hopes and wishes - gone all daytime's hurts and pains.
Soft-hued dreams, a sleepworld peaceful, slumber - ease all cares away.
Safe, the darkness, safe the moonlight, stay to stave off clamouring day.
But no. The night must always leave when dawn's insistent sky creeps in -
And harsh the sunlight, harsh the noises - fill the world that's lies and
sin.
Fast and careless, brash and rushing, cruel and heartless, Satan's den.
Ugly beauty, hateful loving, Daytime's story starts again.
People cry and people die, birth and life and death goes on.
Glaring brightness, sharp cut shadows. The rat race runs on hard and long.
Raucous laughing, screaming voices, footsteps hurry , rush away -
Find another quiet corner - Lay the seeds of poisoned day.
Light shows clear the shabby facade. All that glisters is not gold.
Dusty corners, webby by-ways. Fine clothes patched and flecked with mould.
Beings vie to be big beings wanting riches, wanting fame.
The little beings keep on trying. I've found out I do the same.
So come, safe darkness, let me hide - somewhere that I can't hear the screams
Of dying hopes and tortured efforts. Welcome, world of soft sweet dreams.
Without the day, though, night can't be - so night and day and night speed
past.
And bittersweet my own long wait for mortal peace to come at last.
